Follow the Signs to Where the Fairies Play

On a fine day of frolicking through a new town, I found myself on a foot path along the river. It had been an enjoyable afternoon of sight seeing and taking in the presumably cowboy friendly, western influenced town full of outdoor enthusiasts. To me that was all good and well, yet I was still seeking a true resonance with something…someone… something that spoke to the Fairy in me. In moments my eye caught small signs with white rabbits on them, pointing down the way. Naturally I was intrigued and follow them to their destination. I was met by a small garden with small rock towers, a life size chess board, flowers with eyeballs, colorful pieces of hanging art and fantastical mobiles. My heart fluttered.
Through the windows of the small building I could spy beautiful crystals calling in the sunlight that splashed off the babbling river just a few paces away. What is this place? I wondered. I ventured onto the porch that was equipped with a “little free library,” a box of books for $1 and a tall shelf that was empty except for a sign that read: “Invisibility Cloaks on sale now!” I slid the door open to see what other magic awaited me inside.
There were books from floor to ceiling. Books of all kinds for all ages, posters of dragons and enchanted lands, woven journals awaiting their words, and a tall ladder that reached the highest shelf in the shop. The fairy inside me was delighted. I took my time exploring around the shop and eventually met Keena, the magical creature who created the space. I thanked her for her imagination, intent, and talent for curating such a wonderland of curiosity! My journey with White Rabbit began that day. In time, I had the privilege of telling stories to young children in the garden, and the honor of getting my published children’s book upon the shelves! Since those days I have moved away from Durango, Colorado and find myself back east in the gentle Catskill Mountains. In all my travels, in this country and in others, White Rabbit Books and Curiosities still stands out as my favorite bookstore & the most magical shop I’ve ever experienced. ~Josie Moon, writing from somewhere in the mountains in New York state... ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to write about what White Rabbit means to you.
